Selling online in Sri Lanka is very doable, but it isn't identical to setting up a shop in the US or UK. Some of the tools you read about most (Stripe, Shopify Payments) aren't available to Sri Lankan businesses in the usual way, so the order in which you make decisions matters. This guide walks through them in the sequence we use with clients.
Payment services, rules and eligibility change. Check each provider's current terms before committing, and speak to your bank or accountant about tax and compliance.
What you need before you build
Before choosing a platform, answer these:
- Who are your customers? Mostly in Sri Lanka, mostly abroad, or both? This decides which payment methods matter.
- What do you sell? A few products, a large catalogue, made-to-order items, or digital goods?
- How will you deliver? Own vans, a courier, or pickup only?
- Who will run it day to day? Someone has to pack orders, answer messages and update stock.
Payments come first because they limit your platform options.
Payment options in Sri Lanka
Local card and wallet gateways
PayHere is the gateway most Sri Lankan online shops use. It accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express and other cards, bank-linked options such as HelaPay, and wallets including Genie, FriMi, iPay and Sampath Vishwa. It supports several currencies (LKR, USD, GBP, EUR and AUD) and pays out to a local bank account. Settlement takes a couple of working days rather than being instant.
Because wallets like Genie and FriMi are available through PayHere, you usually don't need a separate integration for each. Other local gateways exist, such as WebXPay and Onepay. Compare them on their own sites.
PayHere also provides plugins for WooCommerce, Shopify and other platforms, and an API for custom builds.
Cash on delivery and bank transfer
Cash on delivery (COD) is popular because many customers are cautious about paying online. It has real costs: refused parcels, returns and delays in getting your cash back from the courier. Bank transfer avoids card fees but needs manual checking of each payment. Many shops offer card payment plus COD for local orders and encourage prepayment for large or custom ones.
Why Stripe and Shopify Payments aren't the default
Sri Lanka isn't on Stripe's list of supported countries, and Shopify Payments isn't available here either. Shopify itself tells merchants in unsupported countries to use a third-party provider.
Some businesses get around this by registering a company in a supported country. That brings legal, tax and banking obligations of its own, so treat it as a decision for an accountant, not a quick fix.
Taking payments from customers abroad
International sales are harder than local ones. Options include accepting foreign-currency card payments through a local gateway, or using PayPal. PayPal's status for Sri Lankan accounts has changed repeatedly: for a long time accounts could pay but not receive or withdraw locally, and a receiving service regulated by the Central Bank was announced in 2026 (Ada Derana). Check the current status with your bank and PayPal before you build your checkout around it.
How to choose a gateway
Compare gateways on:
- Approval requirements. What documents do they need, and how long does approval take? Start early: it can delay your launch.
- Settlement. How many days until money reaches your bank?
- Currencies. Do you need to sell in anything besides LKR?
- Platform support. Is there a ready plugin for your chosen platform?
- Support. Can you reach a real person when a payment fails?
Delivery and couriers
Decide your delivery rules before launch and show them clearly:
- Which districts do you cover, and how long does each take?
- Who pays for delivery, and is it shown before checkout?
- How does COD cash reach you, and how quickly?
- What is your returns process, and who pays to send an item back?
- Do customers get tracking?
Surprise delivery costs are one of the biggest reasons shoppers abandon an order, so show them early.
Checkout best practices
- Offer guest checkout. Forcing people to create an account is a well-documented reason for abandoned carts (Baymard Institute).
- Keep forms short. Ask only what you need to deliver and contact.
- Design for mobile first. Most of your visitors will be on phones.
- Show the total early, including delivery.
- Build trust: clear contact details, delivery and return pages, familiar payment logos.
- Send a confirmation by email, and by WhatsApp if your customers expect it.
Shopify, WooCommerce or custom?
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | Quick launch, simple catalogues, hosted and maintained for you | No Shopify Payments in Sri Lanka, so you rely on a third-party gateway app; less freedom to customise |
| WooCommerce (WordPress) | Content-led shops, flexible plugins, full ownership | Needs updates, backups and good hosting; plugin conflicts can slow the site |
| Custom build | Unusual flows such as custom orders, integrations with stock or accounting systems | More development effort; you need someone responsible for it over time |
There's no universally right answer. For the broader trade-offs see WordPress, custom-built or website builder. If you sell something that needs a custom flow, such as made-to-order jewellery, a custom build may be the better fit.
Legal basics
Publish a privacy policy, return policy and terms of sale. Gateways usually expect them, and customers look for them. Sri Lanka's Personal Data Protection Act is being brought into effect in stages, with key provisions reported to start on 1 January 2027 (Daily FT). Check the Data Protection Authority and take legal advice on what applies to you.
Product page SEO
- Give every product its own page with a clear title, original description and good photos.
- Add Product structured data so Google can read price, availability and ratings. Google's product documentation explains the options, including shipping and return details. Rich results are never guaranteed.
- Keep URLs short and readable, and use categories that match how people search.
- Make the site fast. Our guide to Core Web Vitals covers the main fixes.
Launch checklist
- Payment gateway approved and tested with a real transaction
- Delivery areas, times and costs published
- Return, privacy and terms pages live
- Order emails sent and checked
- Mobile checkout tested on a real phone
- Product pages and structured data checked
- Analytics and conversion tracking installed
- Someone assigned to handle orders and messages
